In the construction project of the Data Center at the Cloud Computing Industry Technology Innovation and Incubation Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Dongguan (hereinafter referred to as the Dongguan CAS Cloud Computing Center Data Center Project), based on these considerations, an energy-efficient power supply system and a thermal management system provided by Emerson Network Power were adopted, thereby establishing a robust infrastructure platform for the green and secure operation of the data center.
The Dongguan Cloud Computing Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences is a cloud computing technology innovation and incubation platform jointly established by the Dongguan Municipal Government and the Chinese Academy of Sciences. It is dedicated to building a technological platform for the cloud computing industry, developing common industry technologies, fostering industrial chains, and providing comprehensive cloud computing solutions and services. As the South China branch of the National Disaster Recovery Center, the center is connected to disaster recovery nodes in 12 cities across the country and provides cloud computing services to over 200 enterprises. The project has a total construction area of 76,000 square meters, including a data center covering 10,000 square meters—the largest cloud computing data center built locally in Dongguan.
Given the exceptional importance of this large-scale cloud computing platform construction project, its construction standards are naturally of an extraordinary caliber. While adhering to high starting points and stringent standards, the Guangdong Provincial Center for Cloud Computing of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Dongguan has placed particularly high demands—both technologically and in terms of performance—on data center infrastructure components such as power supply systems and thermal management systems. Among these requirements, aside from reliability, energy efficiency is the aspect that the Guangdong Provincial Center for Cloud Computing of the Chinese Academy of Sciences pays the most attention to. In response to calls for energy conservation and emission reduction, as well as to reduce operational costs, the center requires that the products demonstrate outstanding energy efficiency performance and has set forth strict specifications specifically targeting the data center’s PUE value.
During the product bidding phase, after multiple visits and inspections of Emerson Network Power’s headquarters, factories, and successful case studies, the project team from the Guangdong Provincial Cloud Computing Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Dongguan gave a comprehensive endorsement of Emerson Network Power’s technological strength and its exemplary implementation in the cloud computing field. As a result, the team ultimately adopted Emerson Network Power’s NX series 500KUPS systems and Liebert PEX series precision air conditioners specifically designed for data center cooling—both crucial components—in large-scale deployments for power supply and thermal management in data centers.
As two high-performance products widely used in the data center sector and proven through practical application to enjoy a strong market reputation, the NX series UPS systems and the Liebert PEX series precision air conditioners specifically designed for computer rooms with chilled water systems—thanks to their cutting-edge application technologies and outstanding overall performance—fully meet the stringent selection criteria for this project. In particular, their exceptional energy-saving performance has earned high praise from the Guangdong Provincial Academy of Sciences Cloud Computing Center in Dongguan.
From the perspective of R&D technology and overall performance, the NX series UPS system is a highly reliable, green power solution. It employs IGBT rectification technology, offering excellent resistance to grid disturbances. The system boasts an efficiency rate as high as 95.5% and supports intelligent parallel operation, delivering substantial energy-saving benefits. Moreover, its exceptional load-carrying capacity is a key highlight of this system—products in the high-power segment can handle 12.5% more load than traditional UPS systems when serving new-generation server workloads. In addition, Liebert’s PEX series precision air conditioners specifically designed for data centers feature a modular design and are characterized by high efficiency, high reliability, high flexibility, and low lifecycle costs. Among these models, the chilled-water units come in both single-coil and dual-coil configurations, enabling them to meet a wide range of application requirements. Particularly noteworthy is the system’s outstanding energy efficiency: equipped with high-efficiency EC fans, the system can intelligently adjust airflow based on actual load conditions, resulting in even higher operational efficiency and significant energy savings. Furthermore, the system incorporates large-area V-shaped heat exchangers, which enhance heat transfer efficiency per unit area, thereby further reinforcing its energy-saving performance.
In recent years, cloud computing—a strategic direction for the future development of the information industry and a key engine driving economic growth—has experienced rapid growth, with cloud computing service platforms springing up across the country. Amid this rapid expansion of cloud computing, Emerson Network Power has continuously driven technological innovation and engaged in practical exploration, comprehensively developing a full range of infrastructure products and integrated solutions that efficiently meet the application needs of cloud computing. The successful implementation of the Chinese Academy of Sciences Cloud Computing Center project has further enhanced Emerson Network Power’s market leadership in the cloud computing infrastructure sector.
